But; What is leadership? and why is it so important? Leadership could be defined as the set of skills that a person possesses, to influence the way of being or acting of people or also of a specific work group, making it work with enthusiasm in benefit of achieving goals or objectives.

In the company, the leadership is not only to develop results, which would be the most simplistic version of the term and unfortunately often happens, but also develop the organization for the future. The sum of both will determine the long-term success of the company.

Finally and after that self-analysis of oneself and that one is already able to identify what leadership competencies have to improve (proactivity, communication, empathy, assertiveness, adaptation to change, motivation, training, … etc.), It is important to know that to address our current business challenges, it is essential to know and understand which are the five dimensions of leadership:

  • Direct yourself
  • Get planned results
  • Generate momentum and attraction
  • Develop and / or change the culture and status quo
  • Guide, teach the way

Indeed, all dimensions of leadership are important, but the connection of all of them comes from “directing oneself – a model to follow”. When we talk about what it is about, we can think about what we are passionate about and how it connects with our daily work. Maybe if you answer the questions of: What brings you more satisfaction at work? and why exactly do I do this work? Get the answers that will help you to better address yourself and therefore others.

However, and in response to a study conducted by the Harvard Business Review in which 195 leaders from 15 different countries and more than 30 organizations were asked about the most important leadership competencies in the world and answering the question What makes a leader really effective? The following answers were obtained that can serve as a guide in your professional development plan:

1.- Have ethical and moral standards. A leader with high ethical standards transmits being committed to justice and makes his employees comply with the rules. What we have traditionally always known, to lead by example.

2.- Satisfy goals and objectives without deviating. The credibility of a leader depends to a large extent on leading by example and not skipping his own standards to achieve results. There is a repetition of being “coherent” with oneself and with others.

3.- Clearly communicate expectations. When a leader clearly communicates his expectations, he does not turn his back on his team and makes sure that they all row in the same direction. In a safe environment, employees relax and experience a greater capacity to engage, innovate and be creative.

4.- Have the flexibility to change your mind. If a leader is willing to take other opinions into account, not only will he learn it, but he will encourage joint learning and innovation in the organization he leads.

5,- Oblige to continuous training. A good leader must always be willing to improve, to learn more things and be able to transmit them to those who are below in the hierarchy so that one day they will be equally good at leading. This quality undoubtedly becomes more important today, according to the times of changes in which we move.

6.- Communicate frequently and openly Leaders who communicate frequently and openly with their team create a greater connection with their employees and from these with the cause. As we have already commented on the odd occasion, the time we invest with our team is a very profitable investment.

7.- Be open to new ideas and approaches. This helps promote innovation and learning within the organization that leads. As Steve Jobs said: “It does not make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what they have to do.”

8.- Create a feeling of success and failure altogether. When a leader considers that  failures and victories are faced and celebrated respectively as a team, employees feel more wrapped up and connected to the common cause. Failure does not exist, it is an apprenticeship without a doubt and we should receive it and success should also be celebrated, we celebrate little and it is very important to rejoice in victory. In this way we are transmitting to our brain a very powerful message that “we must repeat it”.

9.- Help the next generation of leaders grow That the leaders of tomorrow exist, and are even better, depends in large part on the fact that those of today transmit their knowledge and help them climb. It is important that leaders show commitment and pass on their knowledge. This point is in my opinion very related to the self-esteem of many, who consider that transmitting to the rest or propitiate information they resThey can empower themselves, when the effect is the opposite. Having a mature team is to be “smart”, regardless of the concept of sustainability so important in people and companies.

10.- Provide security for testing and error. When a team feels that it has support to try new things and face the situation if they go wrong, they risk much more when innovating. This can be very positive for the lead organization, as it encourages growth and innovation. And the question that we should all ask ourselves is: And in our company, do we reward initiatives or, on the contrary, do we focus on punishing errors?
