The role of leadership in ISO 14001: 2015

With the revision of ISO 14001: 2015, greater importance has been given to the work carried out by the leadership and its contribution to achieving the objectives set.

With the revision of ISO 9001: 2015, top management should not only be a leader but a leader.

However, we can not forget other aspects such as the role of leadership that occupy a relevant place due to the influence it has throughout the text.

In this article I will talk about leadership in the Environmental Management System and for this I will take as a reference part of one of the chapters of the publication “ISO 14001: 2015. The Axes of Review “.

The definition of top management in ISO 14001: 2015.

To understand what the rule in paragraph 5, “Leadership” indicates, we must start with a definition that gives us the same rule: top management.

And is that top management is defined as the “person or group of people who control and run an organization at the highest level.” That is to say, it is a position from which it has authority to delegate to other people in the organization and at the same time provides the necessary resources so that it can achieve its objectives and function in the right way.

With this definition in mind we can immerse ourselves in the role of leadership in ISO 14001: 2015.

The importance of the work of leadership in the company.

Although this chapter is new in the revision of ISO 14001, it is not completely unknown since in the version of 2004 we could already see its influence throughout the document.

It is now intended to give greater prominence to the work carried out by senior management in the environmental management system. In this way, a greater involvement is sought through the following fields:

Assuming responsibility for the effectiveness of the system.
Ensuring that policy and objectives are aligned with the context and strategic direction.
Integrating the system requirements into business processes.
Performing an effective communication work.
Establishing a leadership and leadership role for people.
Supporting other roles.
Promoting continuous improvement.
Ensuring that the environmental management system achieves the results
Ensuring that resources are available
By giving more importance to the figure of the top management, also have been added major elements of commitment.
