Big Data in the big logistics, DHL SC Iberia in the European project SELIS

Within Horizon 2020, the EU has decided to devote € 18 M to the SELIS Project with the aim of providing a light ICT structure, which allows the exchange of information to achieve a sustainable and collaborative pan-European logistics. DHL Supply Chain Iberia participates in the project contributing its experience in Big Data.

With the project (Shared European Logistics Intelligent Information Space), SELIS, the EU wants to help companies build sustainable, collaborative and agile supply chains. Among the participating companies, is DHL Supply Chain Iberia, a subsidiary of one of the main global operators DHL. Santiago Blasco, Innovation and Services Manager of Added Value of DHL SC Iberia, points out that despite the evolution of the technologies and tools of analysis of the supply chain in recent years, its integration in the companies is still far from easy .

The supply chain is one of the largest sources of data, as it contains and generates information that affects almost all areas of a company. However, and despite recognizing the great value that this implies, very few effectively take advantage of its potential. From DHL SC Iberia we want to contribute to SELIS all our experience and best practices in this environment to help them.

DHL SC Iberia contributes its experience in Big Data

Data mining, pattern recognition, analytical and business intelligence tools, among others, are being integrated into the emerging field of supply chain data science, making it evolve towards a proactive model and, ultimately Instance, predictive.

Thanks to the wide experience of DHL, worldwide and in companies of all sizes and sectors of activity, in the application to the business of analytical data extracted from the supply chain, one of the areas in which DHL Supply Chain Iberia can make important contributions to SELIS is in the Big Data environment and in its application in the prediction of trends and behaviors.

The data analysis reduces the inventory to 30%

In fact, according to the latest reports from DHL Supply Chain, a better prediction of demand thanks to data analytics some of its customers have reduced between 20% and 30% of their inventory, depending on the sector, while the The average utilization rate for the supply chain increased from 3 to 7 percentage points.

As Blasco concludes, although the analysis of the data generated by the supply chain provides valuable information on the daily flow of merchandise around the world, its capacity is still to be exploited. Only a small group of pioneer companies use this data as a predictive tool to plan your business more accurately. We believe that SELIS will bring great advances.

SELIS, intelligent information spaces for European logistics

The Shared European Logistics Intelligent Information Space, SELIS, are intelligent information spaces shared by specific logistics communities, called SELIS community nodes. The SELIS nodes connect with their participants through secure infrastructure and provide information and tools for the use and acquisition of data, through a cooperation agreement. Connected nodes provide and distribute common communication and navigation platform for Pan-European logistics applications.
