7 principles for team management
If your business card means that you are a manager, a director, a leader or something responsible, you are doing the most difficult and most exciting job in the world: to lead, to lead, to inspire and also to take responsibility for good and bad results Of a team.
A team is a group of people (more or less) organized, who strives (more or less) to achieve a goal (more or less) in common. I use the term “more or less” without any cynicism, simply because the degree of organization, team involvement and alignment with a company’s objectives are variables that depend on a myriad of factors, such as competencies, experience People, communication system, resources, corporate values, training, history in the market, successes and mistakes, chance … (to name just a few). These variables make each team unique and unrepeatable and, in addition, evolve over time (blessed be the evolutionary ability of the human being that happily complicates everything)
In any case, if your business card carries one of these titles, three major deductions are imposed:
1. It is quite likely that you did not personally choose 100% of your team.
2. It is highly likely that you (with them, and they among them) do not have too much in common except work.
3. And you almost certainly do not like the whole of your team.
If you had not thought about these points, do not worry, it is common to all teams, including the best. So do not represent a true handicap, the cards are the same for everyone and getting the best from your team will depend on your ability as a manager.
Here are 7 short and easy-to-implement principles that can help you improve your team management:
1. Put excitement at work
And the best way is to start the day with a “good day, how are you?” Attentive and forthright. Then, challenge, challenge, inspire, excite, motivate, highlight the usefulness of your work, beyond the benefit of the company, for society, collectivity, humanity … Emotions generate actions, keep it in mind.
2. Do not tolerate injustices, however small
The small injustices of today are the wars of tomorrow.
3. Make work fun
Work is not a biblical curse. In fact, the most spectacular results are obtained when people play and enjoy in their jobs.
4. Make it easy!
Become a hunter of obsolete rules, stupid work systems, useless bureaucracy and rules that no one understands.
5. Celebrate achievements, however small they may be
Obsess yourself by catching your people doing things right. Celebrate, reward with a pat on the back, a free coffee, a public compliment, or a simple “good job, Antonio / a”.
6. Keep all team members informed
Share results, resources, explain goals, tactics … on a regular basis.
7. Be wrong (from time to time) but be determined
Managers are more mistaken not to make decisions than to take them. In addition, a leader loses legitimacy if he is not able to take risks. Recognize and correct your mistakes, but decide, is what is expected of you.
